About this role
Calhoun County Government operates a Youth Center in Benwood that serves residents requiring direct care and supervision. This part-time role places you on the front lines of that work, providing daily oversight, support, and treatment implementation under the direction of the Assistant Youth Center Director. You'll be responsible for the safety and wellbeing of residents across multiple dimensions: supervising their daily routines and hygiene, documenting behaviors, facilitating recreational and educational activities, transporting them to appointments and court hearings, and intervening in crisis situations when needed. The work also includes intake procedures, medication administration, first aid response, and security monitoring.
The position demands strong interpersonal skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure, as you'll be managing simultaneous tasks, responding to behavioral challenges, and occasionally handling physical restraints. You'll work as part of a treatment team, contributing observations and input during meetings and maintaining detailed records. A high school diploma is the minimum requirement, though a bachelor's degree in behavioral sciences is preferred. Prior experience working with youth and skills in group management are strongly desired. You'll need a valid Michigan driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
Be aware that this role carries significant demands. Extended shifts beyond eight hours are frequent, on-call availability is expected, and you'll face occasional exposure to hazardous conditions—chemicals, infectious disease, and the risk of injury during resident restraints. The salary range is $22–29 per hour. This is a fixed-schedule, on-site position suited to someone committed to youth services work and comfortable with the physical and emotional intensity the role requires.
