About this role

Astranis designs and operates satellites for high-orbit communications serving governments, enterprises, and the US military. This twelve-week winter internship puts you on the mechanical engineering team building actual flight hardware—several past interns have had their designs launched to space, and many transitioned into full-time roles afterward.

You'll work hands-on designing, building, and testing spacecraft structures, brackets, and mechanisms using composite and metallic materials. The role includes mechanical and thermal analysis, component procurement and assembly, and documenting procedures to strengthen the build process. You'll integrate your work into the broader spacecraft alongside the engineering team in Astranis's San Francisco headquarters.

The position requires current enrollment in a four-year mechanical, aerospace, or equivalent technical degree program (physics or applied math qualify), plus demonstrated ability to design and build hardware from scratch. CAD experience, stress or thermal analysis skills, and familiarity with electromechanical or control system design are valued but not required. The internship pays $29 per hour and requires US citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or refugee/asylee status due to export regulations on space technology.
