About this role

Calhoun County Government's Youth Center is seeking a Casual Youth Specialist to provide direct care and supervision to residents in a residential treatment setting. Working under the Assistant Youth Center Director, you'll be responsible for creating a safe environment while implementing treatment programs—documenting resident behaviors, facilitating one-on-one counseling conversations, organizing recreational and educational activities, and managing daily routines from hygiene to meals to laundry. The role requires you to work as part of a team, attend planning meetings, and handle crisis intervention when needed, including first aid and appropriate de-escalation techniques.

This position suits someone with a genuine interest in youth development and behavioral health. While a high school diploma is the minimum requirement, a bachelor's degree in behavioral sciences is preferred. You'll need a valid Michigan driver's license and a clean driving record, as transporting residents to appointments, court hearings, and visitations is part of the job. Strong interpersonal skills, patience under pressure, and the ability to multitask in a sometimes chaotic environment are essential.

Be aware that this is a volunteer role based in Benwood, West Virginia, requiring in-office presence with a flexible schedule. The work involves exposure to challenging situations—occasional threats of bodily injury during resident crises, exposure to chemicals and toxins, and frequent extended shifts beyond eight hours. It's demanding work, but if you're drawn to making a direct difference in young people's lives within a structured treatment program, it offers meaningful purpose.
