About this role

Flatiron Health's Tokyo office is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for a 12-month fixed-term contract to build data infrastructure that transforms raw patient information into real-world evidence for cancer care. You'd design and deploy secure systems for data extraction and transformation, working across the full stack—from backend frameworks like ASP.NET Core and Spring MVC to relational databases and Linux administration. The role blends hands-on development with technical leadership: you'll drive architectural decisions, mentor other engineers, and partner directly with oncologists, clinicians, and hospital partners to solve complex problems around data security and privacy.

This position demands someone with at least five years in software development (C#, Java, or Python), equivalent experience with web technologies and backend frameworks, and three years each with relational databases and Linux system administration. You'll need strong expertise in system architecture, API design, and networking fundamentals, plus the ability to troubleshoot connectivity in highly restricted enterprise environments. Equally important: native or advanced business-level Japanese proficiency and the communication skills to lead technical discussions with physicians and hospital executives. You should be willing to travel to hospital sites for on-site server operations and infrastructure work.

The role suits someone who combines deep technical depth with the ability to navigate complex organizational and cultural contexts. Experience with EHR systems, AWS, or server hardware management is valued but not required. You'll work in-office in Shinjuku with standard Tokyo business hours (9:00–18:00) and flex-time eligibility, with a six-month probationary period and statutory benefits including health and pension coverage.
