Description
Are you an Afrikaans language expert eager to shape the future of AI? Large-scale language models are evolving from clever chatbots into powerful engines of linguistic discovery. With high-quality training data, tomorrow’s AI can democratize world-class education, keep pace with cutting-edge research, and streamline communication for Afrikaans speakers everywhere. That training data begins with you—we need your expertise to help power the next generation of AI.
We’re looking for Afrikaans language specialists who live and breathe Afrikaans grammar, syntax, morphology, spelling, phonology, and pragmatics. You’ll challenge advanced language models on topics like verb tense and aspect, sentence structure, word order, regional varieties, formal and informal registers, and the nuances of the Afrikaans writing system—documenting every failure mode so we can harden model reasoning.
On a typical day, you will converse with the model on language scenarios, verify factual accuracy and logical soundness, capture reproducible error traces, and suggest improvements to our prompt engineering and evaluation metrics.
A master’s or PhD in Afrikaans language, linguistics, or a closely related field is ideal; peer-reviewed publications, teaching experience, or hands-on linguistic analysis projects signal fit. Clear, metacognitive communication—“showing your work”—is essential.
Ready to turn your Afrikaans language expertise into the knowledge base for tomorrow’s AI? Apply today and start teaching the model that will teach the world.
We offer a pay range of $8 to $65 per hour, with the exact rate determined after evaluating your experience, expertise, and geographic location. Final offer amounts may vary from the pay range listed above. As a contractor, you’ll supply a secure computer and high-speed internet; company-sponsored benefits such as health insurance and PTO do not apply.

About this role
Meridial is recruiting Afrikaans language specialists to train advanced AI models on the complexities of Afrikaans grammar, syntax, and usage. You'll work directly with language models, testing them on linguistic scenarios—verb tenses, sentence structure, regional varieties, formal and informal registers—and documenting how and why they fail. The role demands deep expertise: a master's or PhD in Afrikaans language or linguistics is expected, ideally backed by peer-reviewed publications, teaching experience, or linguistic research projects. Your core responsibility is metacognitive analysis: conversing with the model, verifying accuracy, capturing reproducible errors, and feeding insights back into prompt engineering and evaluation metrics.
This is a freelance position based in South Africa, conducted in-office. You'll need to provide your own secure computer and high-speed internet; contractor benefits like health insurance and PTO are not included. Pay ranges from $8 to $65 per hour depending on your experience, expertise, and location. The work suits someone with advanced linguistic training who can articulate not just what a model gets wrong, but why—and who sees value in shaping AI's understanding of Afrikaans for speakers and learners across the region.
