About this role
CannonDesign's St. Louis office is seeking a Commissioning II professional to support the delivery of building systems commissioning across diverse project types—education, healthcare, commercial, and science and technology facilities. You'll work as part of a multidisciplinary team under senior commissioning engineers, handling both office-based planning and substantial field work. The role centers on mechanical and HVAC systems, controls, and operational readiness, requiring you to review technical documents, develop and execute functional performance tests, coordinate with contractors and controls vendors, manage issues logs, and document results through to project turnover.
This is a hands-on position that demands comfort in active construction environments. You'll spend roughly half your time traveling to and walking project sites—including rooftops, mechanical rooms, and other challenging spaces—to observe conditions, witness system start-ups, verify controls, and support troubleshooting. Strong technical communication is essential; you'll need to translate drawings and sequences of operation into clear test procedures and field documentation, then report progress to project teams.
You'll need at least four years of commissioning, HVAC design, or building automation experience, plus a bachelor's degree in engineering (ABET-accredited preferred). The role expects working knowledge of HVAC systems and controls sequences, the ability to read construction documents, and genuine comfort with detail-oriented coordination across multiple priorities. An EIT/FE credential or active pursuit of a commissioning certification is valued, as is prior exposure to complex facilities and controls testing. This is a contract position based in-office in St. Louis.
