Description
About Stack:
Stack is developing revolutionary AI and advanced autonomous systems designed to enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency of modern operations. Stack's autonomous technology incorporates cutting-edge advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning, and cloud technologies, empowering us to create innovative solutions that address the needs and challenges of the dynamic trucking transportation industry. With decades of experience creating and deploying real world systems for demanding environments, the Stack team is dedicated to developing an autonomous solution ecosystem tailored to the trucking industry's unique demands.
About the Role:
Join a high-caliber team of experienced software engineers responsible for delivering some of Stack AV's most foundational technology. The team owns Clockwork, Stack's custom-built, high-performance robotics middleware powering production-grade autonomy applications — as well as StackOS, the operating system that underpins the entire vehicle software stack, and the onboard portion of Deploy Manager, which governs how software is delivered and updated on the vehicle itself. Together, these systems form the critical infrastructure backbone of Stack's safety-critical self-driving platform, operating seamlessly across the vehicle, in simulation, in the cloud, and in HIL testing environments. In this role, you will design, implement, test, and deploy new features and optimizations across this portfolio of systems to extend their capabilities, usability, performance, and reliability.
Responsibilities:
- Design and implementation of high-throughput, low-latency logging frameworks capable of handling massively parallel data streams - telemetry, event and console logs.
- Design, development, and implementation of features, interfaces, and optimizations for Clockwork in collaboration with Autonomy, Cloud, and Safety teams.
- Continually identify opportunities for improving the performance, reliability, and usability of Clockwork, evaluating tradeoffs amongst multiple options in a resource-constrained environment.
- Contribute to the prototyping, development, and maintenance of new and existing sensor interfaces that drive the Perception system of the AV.
- Ensure delivery of high quality software through the principled and consistent use of best practices including robust automated testing, manual and automated code review.
Qualifications:
- Systems Programming: Proficiency of C++, with deep understanding of multi-threading, concurrency models, lock-free data structures, and memory management.
- Knowledge of software engineering life cycle and algorithm design principles.
- Experience developing high performance software systems, deployed in resource constrained environments, preferably for safety critical applications.
- Strong understanding of the POSIX programming environment, Linux, and concurrent programming.
- A passion for writing robust, intuitive, and pragmatic production code.
- Strong understanding of Networking fundamentals.
- Comfortable working with & debugging embedded systems.
- Experience working with common tooling such as Bazel, Boost, etc.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
- Experience with performance evaluation and optimization is highly desired.
- Domain experience working in autonomous driving, robotics or related industry is highly desired.

About this role
Stack AV is building autonomous trucking systems, and this role sits at the heart of that effort—you'd be working on Clockwork, StackOS, and Deploy Manager, the foundational infrastructure layers that enable the entire self-driving platform to operate safely and reliably across vehicles, simulation, cloud, and testing environments. The work spans designing high-throughput logging systems that handle massive parallel data streams, developing performance-critical features for the robotics middleware, building sensor interfaces for perception, and continuously optimizing for both performance and reliability in a resource-constrained setting.
You'll need deep systems programming expertise in C++, particularly around multi-threading, concurrency, lock-free data structures, and memory management. Strong fundamentals in POSIX, Linux, networking, and embedded systems debugging are essential. Experience shipping high-performance software in safety-critical or resource-constrained environments is expected; autonomous driving or robotics domain knowledge is valued but not required. Beyond technical chops, the role demands pragmatism, solid communication, and the ability to collaborate across Autonomy, Cloud, and Safety teams while maintaining rigorous standards around testing and code quality.
This is a remote position based in Pittsburgh, full-time. Note that the role is subject to U.S. national security compliance requirements, which may involve verification of residency, citizenship, or person status, and potential export control restrictions on the technologies involved.
