About this role
Nuro is hiring Autonomous Vehicle Operators to help develop and test its Level 4 self-driving technology in real-world San Francisco conditions. This is a 12-month temporary role on the AM shift (6:00am–2:30pm, five days a week) where you'll operate test vehicles in both manual and autonomous modes, collect data through proprietary software, and provide detailed feedback to engineers. The work involves up to 8 hours daily in the vehicle across diverse traffic scenarios, daily vehicle inspections, basic maintenance tasks, real-time troubleshooting with the dispatch team, and occasional public education or high-profile ridealongs with leadership and investors.
The role demands reliability, strong communication, and composure under pressure. You'll need a valid California driver's license held for at least three years, a clean driving record, and the ability to pass a background check and drug test. Beyond driving skills, you should be comfortable with field equipment (laptops, tablets, smartphones), capable of problem-solving independently, and genuinely interested in learning about autonomous vehicle technology and processes.
The position offers $27/hour base pay plus weekend differentials, full benefits including medical/dental/vision, daily meal reimbursement, paid time off, and a potential biannual performance bonus. Be prepared for the physical demands: extended sitting, frequent head and neck movement, occasional lifting up to 25 pounds, and the sensation of sudden braking or swerving.
