Goodfire is an AI interpretability research lab. We build interpretability agents and infrastructure to understand, monitor, and align AI models.

About the role
I (Eric) am looking for a chief of staff. This role is incredibly intensive, and your main goal will be to make me and the leadership team more effective, however you possibly can. You will do ridiculously high volumes of unglamorous work (e.g., high volume follow-ups, drafting internal/external comms, recruiting coordination, logistics, and driving projects that don’t fit neatly anywhere else). You will wear many hats, including recruiting, hosting events, supporting fundraising, planning offsites, new customer outreach, and goals planning. You’ll need great leadership ability, communication skills, and be able to absorb new information very quickly. You’ll need excellent judgment and discretion, and the ability to represent me and the company internally and externally.
You should have a technical background because you will be expected to understand and gain intuition for the latest developments in AI and mechanistic interpretability. You don’t need to be a researcher, but you should be technically fluent enough to engage deeply with AI/product discussions, learn interpretability concepts quickly, and build real intuition over time.

About this role
Goodfire is an AI interpretability research lab backed by over $200M in funding and founded by researchers from OpenAI and Google DeepMind. They're hiring a Chief of Staff to work directly with the founder and leadership team in their San Francisco headquarters, supporting the mission to make AI systems understandable and aligned with human values.
This role is fundamentally about operational excellence and force multiplication. You'll handle high-volume, unglamorous work—recruiting coordination, internal and external communications, event hosting, fundraising support, offsite planning, and cross-functional projects that don't fit elsewhere. The scope is genuinely broad: you need strong communication skills, exceptional judgment, and the ability to represent leadership internally and externally while absorbing new information rapidly. You'll wear many hats and operate at high intensity.
The critical differentiator is the technical requirement. You don't need to be a researcher, but you must be technically fluent enough to understand AI developments, learn interpretability concepts quickly, and engage meaningfully in product and technical discussions. The ideal candidate has founder or executive experience at a well-funded startup, thrives in fast-paced environments, and ideally has exposure to interpretability techniques. The role demands strong leadership experience, a high work ethic, and genuine ownership mentality. Compensation is $300K–$500K with equity, and the position requires in-person presence five days a week in San Francisco.
