Description
About Redwood Materials
Redwood Materials was founded in 2017 by JB Straubel, co-founder and former CTO of Tesla, on a simple but radical idea: the critical minerals powering the energy transition already exist. They just need to come back. Today Redwood is the largest lithium-ion battery recycler in North America — recovering, refining, and redeploying critical minerals from end-of-life batteries back into the supply chain. On the energy side, Redwood has deployed the largest second-life battery project in the world, delivering power to AI data centers in months rather than years using proprietary energy architecture engineered entirely in-house. The company is profitable, the market it operates in is projected to grow 20 to 50 times over the next decade, and Redwood is the only company with the supply chain, the technology, and the operational scale to lead it.
Solutions Engineer, Energy Storage
As a Solutions Engineer you will serve as a technical voice with Redwood’s energy storage customers. This role bridges commercial and engineering: the Solutions Engineer represents Redwood’s technical capabilities directly in customer conversations. The ideal candidate has a background in design or applications engineering and is eager to bring that expertise closer to the customer, helping Redwood’s commercial team operate with greater technical independence as the business scales.
Responsibilities will include:
- Serve as a technical resource in customer conversations including on-site visits and technical feasibility discussions
- Work directly with customers on initial system design concepts, site integration requirements, and project scoping, translating their needs into actionable technical specifications and clear project expectations.
- Support commercial proposal development including Single-Line Diagrams (SLDs), system layout concepts, technical specifications, and inputs to pricing and capacity models.
- Build and maintain deep expertise in Redwood’s energy storage products — battery chemistry, pack configurations, system architecture, degradation characteristics, and performance parameters — and serve as the go-to technical resource for the commercial team.
- Partner with engineering teams to surface customer feedback, flag capability gaps, and inform the development roadmap based on field learnings and evolving customer needs.
- Enable the commercial team to operate independently on technical matters, reducing reliance on core engineering for routine customer questions and design decisions as Redwood scales.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Hands-on, “get it done” mindset — willing to travel to a customer site, roll up your sleeves, and figure out what’s needed
- Ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy and make well-reasoned technology and product decisions without frequent guidance from engineering leadership.
- Ability to travel up to 30% of time
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work well cross-functionally but also to represent Redwood’s technical capabilities credibly to external customers and translate complex concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
In accordance with California pay transparency laws, the salary range for this position is listed below. Actual compensation may vary based on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and skills.

About this role
Redwood Materials is looking for a Solutions Engineer to be the technical bridge between its energy storage customers and internal teams. You'd spend significant time in customer conversations—both remote and on-site—translating their operational needs into system designs, technical specifications, and project scopes. This means working directly on feasibility assessments, initial design concepts, site integration requirements, and commercial proposals that include single-line diagrams and capacity modeling.
The role demands deep product knowledge across battery chemistry, pack configurations, system architecture, and performance characteristics, positioning you as the go-to technical resource for the commercial team as the business scales. You'll also feed customer feedback and capability gaps back to engineering to inform the development roadmap. The work requires a hands-on mindset, comfort with 30% travel, and the ability to operate independently on technical decisions without constant guidance from engineering leadership.
This suits someone with a background in design or applications engineering—ideally with a degree in electrical or mechanical engineering—who wants to move closer to customers while maintaining technical credibility. You'd be working at a profitable, rapidly scaling company in a market projected to grow 20 to 50 times over the next decade. The role is full-time, in-office in San Francisco, with a salary range of $125,000 to $165,000.
