About this role

Working as a Civil Engineer intern at Langan's Richmond office puts you on the ground floor of land development and infrastructure projects across diverse sectors—mixed-use developments, shopping centers, residential complexes, higher education campuses, and federal work. You'll assist with the full project lifecycle from planning and design through permitting, using industry-standard software like AutoCAD and Civil 3D to prepare engineering documents, plans, and specifications. The role emphasizes hands-on learning in site engineering fundamentals including grading, stormwater management, drainage, and soil erosion control, with real exposure to how terrain, soil composition, and hydrological data shape design decisions.

The position requires a Civil Engineering degree, EIT certification or current FE exam registration, and at least one year of relevant experience—ideally prior internship or professional work in site and civil design. You'll need US citizenship due to federal project requirements, a 3.0+ GPA, and strong communication and analytical skills to work both independently and collaboratively. Langan's culture emphasizes innovation and continuous improvement, so the firm values people who think critically about process and approach.

The compensation package includes a $68,250–$93,000 salary range, full medical/dental/vision coverage, 401(k) matching, paid time off including parental leave, professional development reimbursement, and mentoring support. As a firm consistently ranked among the top ten best places to work in engineering, Langan offers the structured training and cross-office collaboration that typically accelerates early-career growth in civil engineering.
