About this role

Des Moines Prep, a newly opened public charter school in downtown Des Moines, is seeking a Special Education Paraprofessional to support students in grades 8–9 as the school builds its founding team. Working under the direction of the Special Education Teacher and Principal, you would be assigned to a specific classroom or grade level, where you'd help implement Individual Education Plans, deliver targeted instructional support, and monitor student progress toward academic and social-emotional goals. The role emphasizes knowing students well and supporting their full participation in classroom activities and school life.

Your primary focus—about 70% of the position—involves assisting with instruction and curriculum implementation, including organizing classroom materials, maintaining student data, and helping create an organized, welcoming learning environment. The remaining time splits between direct student engagement (supporting behavior and social skill development, building relationships, and delivering differentiated instruction), collaboration with teachers and leadership on instructional alignment, and communicating with families about student progress and school events.

The position requires completion of an approved paraeducator certification program, high school completion or equivalent, and ideally 1–3 years of experience supporting students with special education needs. You'll need strong organizational skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, and a commitment to continuous improvement through feedback and professional development. The role pays $19 per hour and is based in-office in Des Moines.
