About this role
Zeta Charter Schools is building a network of high-performing public schools across New York City and seeking a Legal Counsel to support its rapid expansion. This contract role combines traditional in-house counsel work with strategic project management—you'll handle education law, special education, employment, contracts, and compliance matters across multiple schools, while also driving special initiatives like charter applications, grant writing, and policy development. The position demands someone comfortable working across a broad legal landscape and equally comfortable stepping outside traditional legal boundaries to shape organizational systems and operations.
With four or more years of legal experience, you'd join a lean startup team where flexibility and initiative matter as much as legal expertise. You'll research and advise on everything from building code and real estate to tax-exempt status and litigation, interface with outside counsel, and help identify and implement best practices that strengthen operations. The role is based in-office on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Manhattan office, with flexibility on other days. Compensation ranges from $100,000 to $125,000, plus performance bonuses, comprehensive benefits, and perks including wellness stipends, professional development support, and therapy access.
This role suits someone drawn to mission-driven work in education who thrives in ambiguity and wants to contribute beyond legal advice—someone willing to wear multiple hats, embrace a startup pace, and help shape how a growing organization operates. If you're energized by the intersection of law and organizational impact, and you're committed to expanding access to excellent public education, this is worth exploring.
