Description
Who we are
Atoms is building the machines that power the next era of progress.
Over the last decade, software has transformed the digital world. But the physical world, where food is made, minerals are mined, goods are moved, and industries are run, remains far less intelligent, far less efficient, and far more constrained. We’re changing that.
Atoms builds Physical AI— real-world robots for the industries that move civilization forward, starting with food, mining, and transport. Our systems are designed to understand, predict, and control the real world with precision, turning complex physical operations into something more reliable, more scalable, and more productive.
This work requires more than robotics. It requires deep integration across hardware, software, AI, operations, manufacturing, and real estate. We don’t just build machines in a lab. We deploy them into real environments, operate them, learn from them, and improve them until they work at scale.
We are roboticists, engineers, operators, and builders. We believe the next great technology companies will not only transform information, but the physical systems that shape everyday life.
If you want to work on hard problems with real-world impact, join us.
What you’ll do
- Work on the Machine Learning and AI Infrastructure team, which is focused on providing infrastructure for data scientists and other engineers to use ML and AI technologies effectively.
- Build and maintain software and tools for classical ML stack which helps data scientists manage full training lifecycle from data collection, data preparation, training, deployment and model serving.
- Build and maintain software and tools which enable efficient and effective use of GenAI (LLM) technologies.
- Do background research on latest innovations in the Machine Learning space and bring back insights to apply within the team.
What we’re looking for
- 3+ years of experience as a software engineer, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, taking initiative to drive results.
- Background in data infrastructure, platform infrastructure or ML infrastructure is preferred.
- Enthusiastic about learning new codebases, and making changes in large complex systems safely and efficiently.
- Proficiency in Python and Java programming languages. We’re looking for engineers who are comfortable with multiple languages and have experience building scalable high-performance systems
- Familiarity with Azure and GCP cloud environments, and deployment tools such as Docker and Kubernetes
- Experience in real estate, food technology, or related industries is a bonus, though not required. A passion for solving complex problems in these sectors is key.
Why join us
At Atoms, you’ll work on one of the defining challenges of our time—bringing automation into the physical world to drive real, lasting impact. We exist to uncover valuable unknown truths and turn them into progress, which means constantly pushing beyond what’s known and building what doesn’t yet exist. The work is ambitious and often challenging, but it’s grounded in a shared sense of purpose and a team committed to seeing it through together. Our work only matters if it serves others, and we know that meaningful progress depends on the trust of the people we serve and the strength of our team—so we invest in both, creating an environment where you can do your best work and grow.

About this role
Atoms is building physical robots for real-world industries—food production, mining, transport—and this role sits at the intersection of that ambition and the infrastructure needed to make it work. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Machine Learning Infrastructure team, you'd own the tools and systems that let data scientists and engineers across the company train, deploy, and serve models effectively. That spans the full ML lifecycle: data collection and preparation, training pipelines, model deployment, and serving. You'd also research and integrate emerging generative AI capabilities, keeping the team current with innovations in the space.
The role demands someone with at least three years of software engineering experience who can move independently in a fast-paced environment. You should have a background in data, platform, or ML infrastructure; solid proficiency in Python and Java; and hands-on experience with cloud platforms (Azure or GCP) and containerization tools like Docker and Kubernetes. Comfort learning new codebases and making safe changes in complex systems is essential. Prior experience in food tech, real estate, or similar industries is a bonus but not required—what matters more is genuine interest in solving hard problems in those domains.
This is a full-time, in-office role in San Francisco with five days onsite per week. The base salary range is $176,000–$230,000, plus equity, performance bonuses, and a standard benefits package including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), discretionary vacation, and parental leave.
