Description
Advanced Reentry Technologies
Who We Are:
Inversion is an aerospace and defense company pioneering advanced reentry technology to enable next-generation capabilities from space. By combining high-performance materials, precision aerodynamics, and mission-driven autonomy, Inversion is transforming reentry into an operational capability for an entirely new class of missions.
The company’s highly maneuverable reentry spacecraft, Arc, is designed for rapid global cargo delivery, hypersonic testing, and other national security missions that require precise, controlled flight through the atmosphere. Arc creates an entirely new transportation domain, unlocking unprecedented speed and global reach.
Headquartered in Los Angeles, Inversion designs, manufactures, and integrates its spacecraft under one roof, enabling the company to move rapidly from concept to flight. The company is backed by leading investors including Y Combinator, Spark Capital, and Lockheed Martin Ventures, with customers across the U.S. government and commercial space industry.
Position Overview:
As a Full Stack Engineer II at Inversion, you will build the internal software tools that help our engineering teams innovate, make better decisions, and operate more effectively. You will contribute to the development of internal applications across the stack, from intuitive user interfaces to backend services and integrations. This role is cross-functional and ambiguous by design: you will work closely with technical users, take ownership of scoped problems, and help shape what high-quality internal tools should look like at Inversion. You will be a key member of the Internal Software Tools team, reporting directly to the Director of Software.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain internal web applications and tooling that support engineering workflows across the company.
- Contribute to the end-to-end lifecycle of internal tools, including problem definition, technical design, implementation, testing, deployment, and long-term maintenance.
- Build intuitive user interfaces and workflows for technical users, with a strong focus on usability, clarity, and speed.
- Develop backend services, APIs, and integrations that support internal dashboards, documentation systems, data review tools, and AI-enabled workflows.
- Partner closely with engineers and other technical stakeholders to identify pain points, gather requirements, and translate loosely defined needs into practical internal products.
- Follow and strengthen best practices for internal application development, including testing, code quality, and maintainability.
- Contribute to the evolution of the Internal Software Tools team’s products and technical approach.
Required Qualifications:
- 2+ years of professional software engineering experience building and shipping production-quality software systems.
- Strong front-end development experience with TypeScript/Javascript and frameworks like React
- Experience developing backend systems, APIs, or internal tools using technologies such as Python, Node.js, or Go.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including application design, testing, debugging, code quality, and maintainability.
- Familiarity with Linux development environments and basic CI/CD workflows.
- An innovative and optimistic approach to an environment with high ambiguity, shifting priorities, and loosely defined problem spaces.
- Position may require occasional extended hours and/or weekend work.
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government Secret/Top Secret security clearance.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience building internal tools for engineering teams, such as dashboards, test and data review tools, documentation systems, or workflow automation. Extra points if this was for Aerospace!
- Experience integrating AI-enabled capabilities or interfaces into internal software products.
- Familiarity with databases, data modeling, and the tradeoffs between different storage approaches.
- Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, or modern deployment workflows.
- Prior experience in a small team or startup environment where you were expected to take ownership and execute independently.

About this role
Inversion is building spacecraft systems to deliver payloads from space to anywhere on Earth in under an hour, and they need a Full Stack Engineer II to create the internal software tools that make this possible. You'd be joining a small, well-funded team (backed by Y Combinator, Spark Capital, and Lockheed Martin Ventures) working on mission-critical applications that directly support their engineering operations—dashboards, data review tools, workflow automation, and AI-enabled systems that help the company innovate faster and make better decisions.
The role spans the full stack: you'll own problems end-to-end, from designing intuitive interfaces for technical users in React/TypeScript through building backend services in Python, Node.js, or Go, to deployment and maintenance. You'll work closely with engineers across the company to translate loosely defined needs into practical products, which means comfort with ambiguity and independent execution are essential. The position requires 2–5 years of production software experience, strong fundamentals in both frontend and backend development, and familiarity with Linux and CI/CD workflows. Security clearance eligibility is mandatory due to ITAR compliance.
This is an in-office role in Playa Vista, California, with a salary range of $101,000–$160,000. The work can occasionally extend into evenings or weekends. Prior experience building internal tools for engineering teams—especially in aerospace—and exposure to containerization, databases, or AI integration would strengthen your candidacy, but the core requirement is solid full-stack capability and the ability to thrive in a startup environment where you own what you build.
