About Gusto
At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff — payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR — so owners can focus on their craft and their customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve.
All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) — because everyone who helps build Gusto should share in its success. Offer amounts are determined by role, level, and location. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.
AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.
About the Role:
As a Senior Revenue Accountant, you will be a critical contributor within the Revenue Accounting team, owning the end-to-end revenue recognition process for our Gusto Retirement segment while also lending support to new and emerging revenue products across the business. You will be responsible for accurate and timely revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606, maintaining and reconciling subledger systems, and partnering cross-functionally with Operations, FP&A, Engineering, and Product teams to ensure financial integrity as we scale.
This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of how modern accounting is done. You will have the chance to build and leverage AI tools and automation to streamline repetitive processes, eliminate manual work, and raise the bar on efficiency across the team. If you're someone who gets excited about making accounting faster and smarter — not just more accurate — this role is for you!
About the Team:
Our Revenue Accounting team is responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely recognition of revenue in accordance with relevant accounting standards. We are a collaborative, forward-thinking team focused on continuous improvement and leveraging technology and AI to streamline our close processes. As we continue to grow and introduce new products and partnerships, this role will be critical in maintaining the quality and integrity of our revenue close while helping shape the processes that support our next phase of growth.
Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:
- Own end-to-end revenue recognition for the Gusto Retirement segment (401K SaaS, IRA, AUM fees, plan administration)
- Prepare monthly journal entries, subledger reconciliations, and supporting schedules for retirement revenue streams
- Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close within established timelines
- Apply ASC 606 guidance to complex arrangements including variable consideration, contract modifications, and principal vs. agent assessments
- Build and maintain automated solutions using AI tools, Python/SQL, or Excel scripting to eliminate manual work
- Identify and implement process improvements across the revenue close, reducing cycle time and increasing accuracy
- Partner with auditors during annual audits — lead walkthroughs, provide documentation, respond to inquiries
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Retirement Operations, FP&A, Engineering, and Data teams on revenue data integrity and new product launches
Here’s what we're looking for:
- Bachelor's in Accounting; CPA preferred (active or in progress)
- 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years focused on revenue accounting
- Strong ASC 606 knowledge applied to SaaS, subscription, or fee-based models
- Proven track record building automation — scripts, tools, or workflows that reduced manual effort (you can speak to these concretely)
- Advanced Excel; Python or SQL a strong plus
- NetSuite or revenue subledger experience a plus
- Big 4 or public accounting background preferred; fintech or financial services a bonus
- Comfortable with ambiguity, curious about AI, and excited to build processes from scratch
Our cash compensation amount for this role is $97,660/yr to $108,114/yr in Denver & most major metro locations, and $116,385/yr to $131,208/yr for San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
At Gusto, we don't use titles the traditional way, as a signal of rank or hierarchy. Instead, our titles describe two things at once — your craft (what you do, e.g. Engineering, Design) and your scope of ownership (what you're accountable for) — which is why you'll see something like "Head of X" instead of a rank word like "Director" that tells you neither. Because of this, the title on this posting may look different from what you'd expect based on the scope and seniority of the role, and from how similar roles are typically titled elsewhere. If you have questions about how this role compares to your current title or level, your recruiter can help translate.
Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.
Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.
When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees.
Reliable, consistent presence: We expect regular and predictable attendance, whether you're working in-office, hybrid, or fully remote, so that you stay closely connected to your team, customers, and stakeholders in real time and ensure colleagues and customers receive the timely support and responsiveness they deserve.
Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto.

About this role
Gusto's Revenue Accounting team is looking for someone to own the complete revenue recognition process for their Retirement segment—a portfolio that includes 401(k) SaaS, IRA products, AUM fees, and plan administration. You'd handle monthly journal entries, subledger reconciliations, and close schedules while applying ASC 606 to complex arrangements involving variable consideration and contract modifications. This role sits at the intersection of financial accuracy and operational scale, requiring you to partner across Operations, FP&A, Engineering, and Product teams to maintain revenue integrity as the business grows.
What sets this apart is the explicit focus on modernizing how the work gets done. You'll be expected to build automation using Python, SQL, or Excel scripting to eliminate manual effort—not just document processes, but actively reshape them. The team values people who are curious about AI and comfortable with ambiguity, especially as new products launch. You'd also lead auditor walkthroughs and own the documentation that supports annual audits.
The ideal candidate has at least five years of accounting experience with three focused on revenue recognition in SaaS or subscription models, ideally backed by a CPA and Big 4 or fintech background. Advanced Excel is table stakes; Python or SQL experience and NetSuite familiarity are strong advantages. The role is hybrid based in Missouri but with flexibility tied to Gusto's office locations, and compensation ranges from $97,660 to $108,114 depending on location and experience.
