About this role
Rarebreed Veterinary Partners is building a specialty surgical center in rural Maine, and they're seeking a board-certified veterinary surgeon ready to shape it from the ground up rather than step into an established role. The Eastern Maine Emergency Veterinary Clinic has invested in modern infrastructure—a newly renovated 5,000 square foot facility with a double OR, surgical prep and endoscopy room, digital imaging, in-house lab, ultrasound, and endoscope—and is experiencing rapid growth with patient volume increasing by over 100 cases monthly. The nearest comparable referral center is more than 2.5 hours away, creating genuine demand for advanced surgical care in the region.
This role suits someone entrepreneurial and experienced who wants autonomy in defining a surgical service rather than inheriting one. You would help determine which procedures and specialties to develop, establish referral relationships throughout the region, mentor emerging veterinarians, and work alongside a growing emergency team. The position offers the chance to elevate veterinary medicine's accessibility in an underserved area while building something with lasting impact on the community.
The salary range is $200,000–$250,000 annually for full-time, in-office work. If you're drawn to professional challenge, problem-solving, and the prospect of creating meaningful change in a growing region rather than simply filling a vacancy, this warrants serious consideration. The location also offers genuine outdoor recreation—proximity to Acadia, skiing, lakes, and Maine's food scene—for those who value life outside the clinic.
