About this role

CityVet's externship program offers third- and fourth-year DVM students a two-week clinical rotation in small animal general practice, with many locations also providing urgent care experience. You'll work directly with veterinarians and their teams on hands-on cases spanning general medicine, surgery, client communication, and clinic operations. The program emphasizes mentorship and is designed to be flexible—you can customize your experience around your specific clinical interests and career goals.

The organization itself is veterinarian-founded and led, structured so that each clinic maintains local autonomy while being supported by a central team. This model shapes the kind of externship you'd have: collaborative, focused on real patient care rather than bureaucracy, and oriented toward helping you understand what working in a veterinarian-led practice actually looks like. You'll receive a competitive stipend paid via direct deposit at the start of your rotation.

The program is open to third- and fourth-year students at AVMA-accredited schools, including international students authorized to work in the United States (though visa sponsorship is not available). CityVet has multiple clinic locations across states, and while housing isn't provided, they can share recommendations from previous externs. If you're looking for substantive clinical experience with real mentorship in a practice model that prioritizes veterinarian autonomy and collaboration, this is worth exploring.
