Description

About Hark

Hark is an artificial intelligence company building advanced, personalized intelligence. One that is proactive, multimodal, and capable of interacting with the world through speech, text, vision, and persistent memory.

We're pairing that intelligence with next-generation hardware to create a universal interface between humans and machines. While today's AI largely operates through chat boxes and decade-old devices, Hark is focused on what comes next: agentic systems that interact naturally with people and the real world.

To get there, we're developing multimodal models and next-generation AI hardware together - designed from the ground up as a single, unified interface for a new era of intelligent systems.

About the Team

You'll build the product surfaces of Hark — the interfaces and experiences users interact with every day across voice, text, and vision.

That means translating what our agent can do into something that feels fast, intuitive, and trustworthy. The gap between a capable AI and one people actually want to use is a product problem, and this role owns it.

This is a high-ownership role on a small team. You'll work directly with designers and model researchers, and what you ship will define how people experience Hark.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build the product surfaces of Hark. The interfaces, conversations, and agentic experiences that users interact with every day across voice, text, and vision.
  • Work closely with designers to ship interactions that feel fast, reliable, and genuinely useful. The details matter here.
  • Own features end-to-end, from early prototyping to production deployment and iteration based on real usage.
  • Build the frontend for agent workflows that integrate tool use, memory retrieval, and multi-step reasoning. Making model capabilities feel coherent and trustworthy to the person using them.
  • Instrument and evaluate what you ship. Track quality, gather signal, and improve.

Requirements

  • Strong frontend engineering fundamentals. You are comfortable building polished, responsive interfaces and you care deeply about how things feel to use.
  • Experience shipping consumer products that real people depend on. You understand the gap between a prototype and something someone trusts every day.
  • Genuine curiosity about AI and agents. You have used LLM-powered products, noticed where they break down, and thought about what would make them better.
  • A product sensibility. You think about the person using the thing, not just the implementation. You notice when something is off and you want to fix it.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and fast iteration. You can take a rough idea, prototype it, get feedback, and move quickly toward something that works.
  • Strong communication. You can work closely with designers and engineers, explain your thinking, and make good decisions together.
  • 5+ years of relevant software engineering experience. Experience at a fast-growing AI or consumer product company is a strong plus.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience at a fast-growing AI or consumer product company.
  • Experience with voice or multimodal interfaces.
  • Experience with real-time streaming UI.
  • Experience building frontend systems for agentic products.

Compensation

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $170,000 - $400,000 annually.

The pay offered for this position may vary based on several individual factors, including job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package may also include additional components and benefits depending on the specific role. This information will be shared if an employment offer is extended.

About this role

Hark is building AI agents designed to interact naturally with people through speech, text, and vision—and they need a full-stack engineer to make that interaction actually work. You'd own the product surfaces where users experience the AI's capabilities: the interfaces, conversations, and workflows that translate what the model can do into something that feels fast, intuitive, and trustworthy. This is a high-ownership role on a small team, working directly with designers and model researchers to ship features end-to-end, from prototyping through production and real-world iteration.

The work spans frontend engineering for agent workflows—building interfaces that make tool use, memory retrieval, and multi-step reasoning feel coherent to users—alongside instrumentation and evaluation to track what actually works. You'll need strong frontend fundamentals and a track record shipping consumer products people depend on daily. Beyond technical chops, the role calls for genuine curiosity about AI and where current LLM products break down, a product sensibility that keeps the user in focus, and comfort moving quickly through ambiguity. Five or more years of software engineering experience is expected, with particular strength if you've worked at fast-growing AI or consumer product companies, or have experience with voice, multimodal interfaces, or real-time streaming UI.

Based in San Jose with in-office work required, this is a full-time role with a salary range of $170,000–$400,000.
