About us

Hysata is on a mission to accelerate the shift from fossil fuels to green hydrogen with the world’s most efficient electrolyser. Our breakthrough capillary-fed electrolyser achieves an unprecedented 95% system efficiency (41.5 kWh/kg) – a step change from incumbent technologies, which typically sit at ~75% and already ahead of International Renewable Energy Agency’s 2050 target. This leap in performance enables a radically simpler system design, slashing both energy use (opex) and system and renewables capex.

Hysata’s innovation has captured global attention, including publication in Nature Communications and support from leading strategic and financial investors such as BP, POSCO and Vestas. With over 100 team members, we’re a high-performing, purpose-driven company, proud to be 35% women, representing 20+ nationalities, and united by a shared mission to enable the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, chemical manufacturing, shipping and aviation.

Having secured Australia’s largest ever cleantech Series B raise of US$111 million, Hysata is scaling rapidly to bring our technology to market. With strong customer demand and a clear path to manufacturing at scale, we are on track to become a global leader in green hydrogen and put a major dent in global emissions.

About the role

We are seeking a Tooling & Equipment Engineer to join our Manufacturing team, with direct responsibility for the design, build and improvement of the tooling, fixtures and equipment that underpin our in-house manufacturing capability. This is a role for a mechanical design engineer who wants to make an instant impact from both a hands-on and a computer-based design standpoint — someone equally comfortable on the factory floor with a tool in hand as they are at the screen developing new designs in CAD. Working closely with our Design, Assembly and Process teams, you will help bridge the gap between lab scale, pilot and high-volume manufacturing.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who gets involved with the team, takes ownership, and starts solving problems from day one. You will thrive in the fast-paced start-up world where no two days are the same, joining a team of smart, driven, collaborative and highly dedicated individuals who love solving engineering challenges and who are excited to be fighting the climate crisis. There is flexibility in both the role and the level of experience for the right candidate — above all we are looking for someone enthusiastic who can dive in and make a difference from day one.

Role responsibilities

  • Design, build and continuously improve in-house tooling, fixtures and equipment to support our efforts to scale manufacturing;
  • Take new tooling and equipment from concept through CAD design, fabrication, build and commissioning on the factory floor;
  • Provide hands-on support to the manufacturing team — troubleshooting, modifying and improving equipment to keep production running and solve problems as they arise;
  • Collaborate with Design, Assembly and Process teams to implement new cell architectures and manufacturing processes;
  • Meet design requirements through rapid, iterative prototyping using 3D printing, machining, laser cutting and similar methods;
  • Work with Hysata partners and vendors to define, develop, validate and commission manufacturing tools and equipment;
  • Define and execute validation plans in collaboration with the rest of the Hysata team;
  • Be involved in data reviews to enable data-driven learning and continuous improvement; and
  • Develop SOPs and safety protocols for new tools, equipment and processes.

 What you'll bring

Key skills

  • Engineering degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing or a similar field;
  • Strong background in mechanical design engineering, with proven hands-on capability to build, modify and commission what you design;
  • Proficiency in computer-aided design (NX preferred);
  • Fabrication experience — hands-on R&D, design, build and test;
  • Contributed to delivering complex projects requiring new tooling, equipment and process development, including equipment specification;
  • A self-starter who takes initiative, gets involved with the team and drives problems to resolution; and
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to product and process design through DFMA (Design for Manufacture and Assembly), DFMEA, validation testing, materials selection and process technology selection.

Valued skills

  • 3+ years of experience in a similar tooling, equipment or mechanical design role;
  • Experience introducing and optimising tooling and equipment in a manufacturing scale-up environment using best-practice methods;
  • Skills in applying advanced manufacturing, automation and digital technology to new and improved manufacturing solutions;
  • PFMEA, QA/QC, SOP, design and process validation;
  • Motivated and capable of working independently within a multi-disciplinary environment;
  • Expertise beyond your field of qualification — spanning mechanical, design, electrical and controls, robotics, materials science and technology;
  • Experience managing relationships with technology partners and vendors through R&D, design, build, test, commissioning and operational support;
  • Ability to adapt within a highly dynamic, fast-paced work environment; and
  • Experience with electrolysers, battery or energy storage systems a plus.
