The route

  1. Get experience with people in crisis

Shelter, food bank or crisis line work. Volunteering counts and is often the way in.

  2. Apply to an agency or nonprofit

Many roles need only a high school diploma plus that experience.

  3. Learn documentation and referral

Case notes and knowing which agency actually handles what.

  4. Decide on a degree

A social work degree is the gate to case management and licensure. Be clear-eyed about pay in this field.
