The route

1. 1

   2–5 years

   Serve as a firefighter first

   Nearly all inspectors come from the line; the code makes sense once you have fought fires.

2. 2

   6–12 months

   Learn the fire code

   IFC and NFPA standards, plus your jurisdiction's amendments.

3. 3

   Certify as a fire inspector

   Usually Fire Inspector I then II, through your state fire marshal or IFSAC.
