THE ROLE Position Title: Technician Department: Operations Reporting Line: Head of Warehouse Location: Paris & Gennevilliers POSITION SUMMARY Sotheby’s is recruiting a Technician – Paris & Gennevilliers Sotheby’s is seeking a Technician to join its team within a leading international auction house. This is a rare and exciting opportunity for a motivated professional to take responsibility for all operational aspects relating to auctions and exhibitions, working closely with our specialist departments and international offices. The role involves receiving, handling, installing, storing, packing, transferring, and releasing all property entrusted to Sotheby’s while ensuring excellent customer service and optimal inventory traceability.
The successful candidate will work across two sites, according to business needs: Sotheby’s Paris premises and the Gennevilliers warehouse. Property entrusted to Sotheby’s covers a broad range of categories, including jewelry, watches, handbags, sneakers, Old Master, Modern and Contemporary paintings, design and classical furniture, sculpture, African and Asian art, and other valuable objects.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensuring Optimal Traceability of Property Entrusted to Sotheby’s Operate inventory management tools and systems, including SAP and other inventory-tracking software. Maintain accurate inventory records through periodic and ongoing stock controls, including proper labeling procedures. Label all property using Sotheby’s barcode tracking system and record movements through SAP handheld scanners.
Report any damage or condition issues to the Risk Manager. Maintain accurate location records in inventory systems at all times. Ensure the safe handling and security of all property.
Assist department representatives in verifying administrative documentation provided by carriers and clients. Lot Preparation and Release Activities (Paris and Gennevilliers) Welcome clients and transportation providers, managing requests in coordination with the Logistics team, Post Sale Services (PSS), and specialist departments where required. Notify relevant departments and services (Registrars and Warehouse teams) of incoming deliveries.
Ensure that collection and release areas are maintained to Sotheby’s standards and consistently present a professional image. Receive property together with the appropriate consignment documentation and in compliance with established procedures. Day-to-Day Management of Incoming and Outgoing Property Request Release Authorizations from the Post Sale Services administrative team and obtain signatures when property is collected.
Collect transport documentation and verify supporting signatures. Maintain organized records of outgoing property to facilitate inventory updates by Registrars. Prepare daily movement reports.
Prepare and locate property scheduled for collection by transport providers. Assist clients and transportation providers with unpacking and packing activities. Receive and reconcile property transferred between exhibition locations.
Art Handling and Additional Operational Duties Install property in exhibition galleries, auction rooms, and boardrooms. Manage hand-carry requests and appraisal-related requests. Coordinate photography requests, including maintaining tracking lists and moving property accordingly.
