Powerdot — Porto, Porto
About the job Charging your car should be as easy as charging your smartphone. And so for that to happen, chargers need to be available where people naturally spend their days. Our mission is as simple as it is ambitious: Accelerate Sustainable Mobility by investing in, installing, and operating EV chargers with a cutting-edge business model.
We help businesses find the right charging solutions for their customers. Today, we've partnered with over 1,200 businesses across Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Poland, with more than 2,200 contracted locations. We are, first, Partner Obsessed 🤝 — creating bespoke solutions to better serve our partners' customers.
We love the challenge of making EV charging simpler, readily available, and integrated with diverse retail and service experiences 💡. And we are all about growing 📈 — expanding our network, our partners' businesses, and the professional development of our team, all while driving the EV ecosystem forward. We seek empowered top performers who share our mission and values, and who are ready to think disruptively and join our exciting journey.
About This Role
As a Senior Backend Engineer at Powerdot, you'll play a crucial role in designing, developing, and deploying high-performance, scalable backend services that form the backbone of our EV charging platform. Your mission is to build and maintain systems that are reliable, secure, and performant enough to support our rapid growth across Europe — ensuring every service scales seamlessly as we expand. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you'll translate business needs into robust technical solutions that keep our network running 24/7.
Requirements
and ensuring backend services meet the needs of the business and our partners. Designing and developing microservices architectures — using Java and Spring Boot to build modular, scalable, and maintainable services. Implementing AWS services — leveraging EC2, S3, Lambda, and RDS to ensure scalable, efficient, and cost-effective operations.
Creating and optimizing database systems — designing both relational and non-relational databases, ensuring data integrity, performance, and reliability. Working with messaging systems — using RabbitMQ and Kafka for seamless, resilient inter-service communication. Utilizing containerization and orchestration — employing Docker and Kubernetes to streamline development, deployment, and scaling processes.
Maintaining high standards of code quality — following best practices around reliability, security, and testability, and upholding rigorous engineering standards. Providing technical guidance and mentorship — supporting junior engineers through code reviews, pairing sessions, and knowledge sharing. This Is About You, Not Us 🫵🏼: Strong experience in microservices architectures — you've designed, built, and deployed production-grade microservices using Java and Spring Boot.
Proficient with AWS services — hands-on experience with EC2, S3, Lambda, and RDS in production environments. Deep understanding of database systems — skilled in database design, optimization, and performance tuning across both relational and non-relational databases. Familiarity with messaging systems — practical experience with RabbitMQ and Kafka for asynchronous, event-driven architectures.
Knowledge of containerization and orchestration — comfortable with Docker and Kubernetes in development and production workflows. Strong problem-solving skills — you break down complex technical challenges and drive them to resolution, independently or as part of a team. Excellent communication skills — you collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and can convey technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
Experience in the EV charging industry is a plus but not required.
